Job type: Faculty
Salary range: $110,000 – $137,500
Location: Seattle
Date posted: December 29, 2023
Established on July 1, 2018, the Department of Health Metrics Sciences is the world’s first academic department devoted to the science of health metrics. The Department of Health Metrics Sciences and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation within the School of Medicine at the University of Washington are recruiting to fill one full-time faculty position at the Professor without tenure (WOT) level. Anticipated start is Spring quarter in Academic Year 2023-24.
About IHME
The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent research organization that produces cutting-edge scientific and policy-relevant quantitative evidence for use by policymakers, donors, and other stakeholders. Based at the University of Washington, IHME’s ongoing work provides high-quality measurement of the world’s major health problems, assesses how these problems are being addressed, and identifies how best to dedicate resources to maximize health improvement. IHME’s approach maximizes cross-disciplinary, quantitative analytic approaches and methods aimed at incorporating all relevant data in order to produce policy-relevant results using ground-breaking science.
The Future Health Scenarios (FHS) team is an integral component of IHME’s modeling portfolio to estimate the future global burden of disease. Utilizing estimates for the Global Burden of Disease study, the FHS team forecasts trends in health outcomes for 300+ diseases, such as deaths, prevalence and disability adjusted life years (DALYs), as well as more than 70 drivers of health outcomes, including risk exposure, vaccine coverage, and social determinants of heath. The platform is also unique in its ability to produce custom scenarios that quantifiably measure the health gains achieved by reducing exposure to known risk factors or scaling up new interventions. The outputs of the FHS framework are a critical tool to guide future health investments and implementing effective policies.
The successful applicant will lead the development of new methodologies to improve the forecasting models across diseases, risk factors and interventions, including management of research staff involved in the production of the forecasts. The successful applicant is expected to have a working understanding of the Global Burden of Disease Study, contribute to the expansion of new analyses within the framework, such as incorporating the impacts of climate change on disease outcomes or incorporation of new interventions or risk factors. This role includes consultation with subject area experts within the Institute as well as those within the global health community, engagement with external partners, and the expansion of the network of collaborators.
The successful applicant will also take on an important leadership role in mentoring predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows working in the field of health metrics. All University of Washington faculty engage in teaching, research, and service. The salary range for this position is $110,000 – $137,500 commensurate with experience.
Assistant Professors in the Department of Health Metrics Sciences have an annual service period of 12 months (July 1– June 30). Faculty appointed WOT do not hold tenure because all or part of their annual University-administered salary is derived from sources other than regularly appropriated state funds. Except for this distinction, WOT faculty members have the same rights, responsibilities, and obligations as tenure-track and tenured faculty members at those ranks.
The successful applicants will have an MD, PhD, or foreign equivalent in medicine, epidemiology, population health, health metrics, biostatistics, public health, statistics, health informatics, health policy, or other relevant subject. The successful applicant will have a proven record of quantitative research in health metrics including statistical modeling using and synthesizing multiple and large data sets.
