Celebrating 100 Years of Insulin

Published April 16, 2021

IHME celebrates the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin, a health innovation that has saved millions lives worldwide.

In this video, Research Scientist Dr. Liane Ong on IHME's Global Burden of Disease: Diabetes Estimation team briefly explains findings from GBD 2019.

Transcript:

In GBD 2019, IHME estimated that there approximately 460 million people in the world with diabetes. The rate of diabetes has increased in every region of the world and nearly 50-percent globally since 1990. This increase is driven by type 2 diabetes. This is not surprising, as we also see rising rates of obesity throughout the world, which is a major risk factor of diabetes. We expect to see this increase continue in GBD 2020, and no clear evidence that it will change any time soon.
